McDonald's brothers innovated the operation of a hamburger restaurant into a fast food business in California in 1948.
The fast-food business was copied and grew rapidly at a time when the economy was growing, and automobiles became popular among families.
This business model was so efficient that other new restaurants chains emerged and expanded nationwide, such as Burger King and Kentucky Fried Chicken.
The chain store business model was soon adopted by other retail businesses like clothing stores and hotels and became an international phenomenon.
