Writing-Mar.22

Write an opinion paragraph about when choice is a good thing for you, people, or business in five or six sentences.

A. Brainstorm: 1-> Model Writing
TS: I believe customers like choices.
SS-1: I am the manager of a big supermarket, and customers come to my store because we sell so many products.
-> SD-1: They don't go to smaller stores because they may not have their favorite products.
SS-2: They come to our store to get particular items.
-> SD-2: Customers like to know that they can buy their favorite products at our store.
CS: The supermarket is successful because we offer many choices.

B. Plan: Think of a situation when/where choice is a good thing.
Examples: ice cream, flavored drink, restaurant/school cafeteria menu, reference/workbook, mechanical pencil, face mask, pain killer, stamp, eyeglasses, smartphone, school uniform
Begin your paragraph with a topic sentence (TS) that introduces your main idea.
Write two supporting sentences (SS-1, SS-2) with a supporting detail (explanation/example) for each SS.
Add a concluding sentence (CS) at the end of the paragraph.

Clarify SS or D:
Use “Also,” to introduce the 2nd SS,
“For example,” to show a D,
but no need to say “so” before CS or in the sentence.
Try using “help sb do”

Internet Shopping-Mar.11

What is the biggest advantage of  Internet shopping for you?
Write your response in three to four sentences with one or two supporting sentences

TS The biggest advantage of Internet shopping for me is that I can save time
SS-1 I don’t need to go out and walk around looking for things I need.
SS-2 Also, I can check the prices without visiting different stores.
D There are sites on the Internet where I can compare prices at once.

Video Transcript-Mar.11

#1 Narrator: Whether booking a vacation, shopping for music, or buying food, shopping today can be right at your fingertips. The Internet has *revolutionized the way we shop.

Title: Internet Shopping
Narrator: Already, we spend more than 800 billion dollars online each year, and as more people around the world get Internet access, that figure will rise.
To discover why Internet shopping is so popular, let’s compare two ways to buy a new pair of sneakers.
First, we walk to the nearest store. Unfortunately, they don’t sell the style of sneakers we want. So we try *elsewhere
At the next store, they do have the right style but not the right size.
Finally, the third store has exactly what we’re looking for. Now let’s *rewind and try again.
This time, we go online. Instead of visiting just three stores, we can visit hundreds—even those on the other side of the world. And by comparing lots of places, we spot the sneakers on sale at an even lower price.
We transfer payment, the sneakers are packaged and mailed, and a few days later, they arrive.
By going online, we can shop at any time without leaving home. Which is great if we can’t get to the store very easily.
Title: Internet shopping (Advantages) : visit hundreds of shops  compare prices  shop at any time
*revolutionize: verb to change something completely, usually making it better
*elsewhere: adverb in or to another place
*rewind: verb to make a video or music tape go backward

#2Narrator: But there are disadvantages to Internet shopping. Can you think what they might be?
Title: Disadvantages of Internet Shopping
Narrator: Those local stores were more expensive partly because they have higher costs to pay, such as rent and sales staff. They struggle to match the price of their online competitors, and as a result, some stores have closed down. People have lost their jobs, and town centers have started to look empty. There are disadvantages for customers, too. We have to wait for deliveries, and if we miss a delivery, we have to collect the item ourselves. And if the clothes or shoes don’t fit, we have to post them back.
And when we shop online, we miss out on the social aspect of shopping: talking to people!
Title: Internet shopping disadvantages: shop closures  missed deliveries  no social aspect

#3Narrator: For most people, the advantages of Internet shopping *outweigh the disadvantages, meaning Internet shopping is here to stay.
Title: The Internet has revolutionized shopping.
*outweigh: verb to be greater or more important than something
