The Nutcracker-Dec.2018

The Nutcracker
The Nutcracker is a two-act ballet, originally choreographed by Marius Petipa with a score by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (Op. 71). The story is adapted from Hoffmann's story "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King." It was given its premiere at the Mariinsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg on Sunday, 18 December 1892.

Prologue
The famous overture is played while guests are gathering at the Stahlbaum house on Christmas Eve.

The Party Scene
A large and grand house with the most beautiful tree imaginable. The Stahlbaums are hosting their annual Christmas party, welcoming the arrival of their family and friends. The children, Clara and Fritz, are dancing and playing as they welcome their friends, too.
The party grows festive with music and dance as godfather Drosselmeyer arrives. He is a skilled clock and toy maker and always full of surprises. Drosselmeyer draws everyone's attention as he presents two life-size dolls. They are the delight of the party, each taking a turn to dance.
The children begin to open gifts when Drosselmeyer presents his to Clara and Fritz. Although his gift to Fritz is quite nice, he gives Clara a beautiful Nutcracker that becomes the hit of the party. Fritz becomes jealous and grabs the nutcracker from Clara and promptly breaks it. Clara is heartbroken looking on as Drosselmeyer quickly repairs the Nutcracker.
As the evening grows late, the guests depart and the Stahlbaum family *retires for the evening. Clara, worried about her beloved Nutcracker, sneaks back to the tree to check on him, falling asleep with him in her arms.   *retires  to leave a room, go to bed

The Fight Scene
As the clock strikes midnight strange things begin to happen. Clara begins shrinking as her beautiful Christmas tree grows high above her. The toys around the tree come to life while the room fills with an army of mice, led by the fierce Mouse King. As the Nutcracker awakens, he leads his army of toy soldiers into battle with the mice. The Mouse King corners the Nutcracker and battles him one-on-one. The Nutcracker seems to be no match for the Mouse King.
The Nutcracker and his army can go on no longer and are captured by the mice and their King. Clara makes a final daring charge throwing her slipper at the Mouse King, hitting him on the head. The Mouse King drops to the floor and the mice run away, carrying off their leader's lifeless body.

The Land of Snow
The Nutcracker turns into a Prince and takes Clara on a journey to the Land of Snow, an *enchanted forest wonderland where they are welcomed by dancing snowflakes.
   *enchanted changed by magic,

The Land of Sweets
The Prince escorts Clara to the Land of Sweets where they are greeted by the Sugar Plum Fairy. The Prince tells her about their daring battle with the army of mice and she rewards them with a celebration of dances.
The Spanish Dance
The Arabian Dance
The Russian Dance
The Chinese Dance
The Mirliton Dance
The Waltz of Flowers
As a finale, the Sugar Plum Fairy and the pair dance a beautiful Pas De Deux.

The Dream Ends
Clara awakens from her dream and finds herself by her Christmas tree with her beloved Nutcracker.

Writing-Sr.2-Dec.19

Write a paragraph in response to a question posted on an online forum/blog about politeness;
I think that young students today are very rude. I’m one of the senior members of the school Judo club. How can I teach junior members to be polite?
Plan
1. Write a topic sentence to answer the question.
2. Write examples as many as you can think of to support the topic sentence and main idea.
3. Exchange the planning sheet with a partner. Circle the good examples to support the topic sentence.
4. Choose or revise the examples, or add more examples to best answer the question.

Write a paragraph to answer the question with two or more examples to support your answer.
Try to use the vocabulary from the unit, adjectives with prefixes or suffixes.
Deadline: by the end of Friday, Dec.21

You should teach the junior members the importance of being polite to be a good Judo player.
First, you can remind the junior members that keeping good manners is part of Judo. For example, Judo players bow each other before and after a match.
Also, you can show junior members how they should talk and behave to seniors or the coach yourself. They see and hear how you speak or do things in the club and will naturally learn the good language and a proper way to be a Judo player.
They may not be polite to others or know good manners now, but they will learn good behaviors soon like you did.

TS Many people do not have good cell phone manners, and they are impolite when they use their phones.
For example, some people make or take calls in a quiet public place and talk loudly. It is quite annoying to hear someone talking loudly in a place where silence or only quiet conversations are taking place. Such people don’t seem to care about the others around them.
There are also people who call from a noisy place. They tend to talk too loudly because they can’t hear well. It is inconsiderate to the person who has to bear with the noises and loud voice of the caller. Convenience for one person may be an annoyance for another.
Cell phone users tend to be inconsiderate to others than they usually are when they are on the phone.

CS If cell phone users were more thoughtful of others, they might be more polite.

What do you think? B-2
Do you think that people are naturally polite? Or do they learn to be polite? Explain with examples.
=>Write 4-6 sentences in response.

I don’t think most people are naturally polite but they learn to be polite from others.
First, people learn what is polite and impolite by seeing how others behave in certain situations.
For example, children tend to greet and talk to others in a same or similar way their parents or teachers do.
If parents speak politely, their children try to be polite, and vice versa.
Also, people tend to be polite to others when they are treated or greeted with respect and care. If one is greeted very nicely by someone, he or she would most likely react politely.
Of course, there are people who are naturally polite, but it seems that most people learn polite manners from others in their society.
After all, people tend to influence each other either positively or negatively.
