Joseph Conrad-Jul 26

Joseph Conrad (1857-1924) is regarded as one of the greatest novelists in English. He was granted British nationality in 1886, but always considered himself a Pole. Though he did not speak English fluently until he was in his twenties (and always with a marked accent), he brought a distinctly non-English sensibility into English literature. He wrote stories and novels, many with a nautical setting, that describe trials of the human spirit. His narrative style and anti-heroic characters have influenced many authors.
The Nigger of the 'Narcissus' (1897)        Heart of Darkness (1899)
Lord Jim (1900)      Typhoon (1902)      Nostromo (1904)

Writing-Jul 23

You’ve found a question posted on an online forum about politeness;
I’m one of the senior members of the school Judo team. I think that young students today are very rude. How can I teach the junior members to be polite?

Write your response to the question with two or more examples to support your response, and a conclusion.
You should teach the junior members the importance of being polite to be a good Judo player.
First, you can remind the junior members that keeping good manners is part of Judo. For example, Judo players bow to each other before and after a match. Also, you can show junior members how they should talk and behave to seniors or the coach yourself. They see and hear how you speak or do things in the club, and will naturally learn a good language and a proper way to be a Judo player such as saying "Yes, sir" clearly to the couch instead of just nodding like you do to your friend.
They may not be polite to others or know good manners now, but they will learn good behavior through practice, like you did.

Write summaries-Jul 23

Read #1, 2=> Write a summary in one sentence.
There are heated arguments as to who actually wrote all Shakespeare’s plays, especially between the Oxfordians and the Stratfordians, because there are just too many works under his name.

Read Oxfordians’ Case, Stratfordians’ case (p.51)=> Write a summary in one sentence each.
The Oxfordians believe that Shakespeare was an actor but not the author of the works because of his lack of education, and de Vere was the one who wrote the plays.
The Stratfordians claim there are no rational reasons to doubt that Shakespeare wrote the works/on Shakespeare’s authorship.

[Intro] It’s always important to be polite. But what this means isn’t always the same. It’s different across cultures . . . and it changes as new technologies emerge and develop. Take the mobile phone, for example.
Twenty-five years ago, phones were only for talking. And phones couldn’t move very far. But now we use them for everything—all the time! Because of this, we need new rules around when we should—and, more importantly, when we shouldn’t—use our phones.
[US] A recent survey in the U.S., for example, says that 62 percent of people believe it’s rude and inappropriate to speak on your phone in a restaurant. 88 percent of people say it’s bad manners to use your phone at a family dinner. And 95 percent of people say it’s completely unacceptable to use your phone in quiet places, like in a movie theater.
But in the U.S., most people think talking on your phone is OK in public spaces, like in the street or on public transportation.
[Others] This is very different in Japan. You can use your phone, but it’s very disrespectful to talk on it while on the bus or train. This is because chatting loudly invades people’s personal space and can make others feel awkward.
But in some countries, like China, this isn’t a problem. People chat on the phone anywhere and everywhere, and it isn’t unusual or uncommon to interrupt conversations to answer the phone.
But there is one place where using the phone is always impolite: the classroom. In 2018, primary and secondary schools in France banned mobile phones because children used them too much. Now many other countries want to do the same thing.
[CS] But it’s a bit more complicated with adult learners. After all, it can often be impossible not to use smartphones. They are our calendars, dictionaries, calculators—even our notebooks!
But whenever and wherever we use our phones, it’s important to do so with respect. That’s always a sure way to avoid embarrassment.

Eiken Speaking-Jul 16

Cigarette smoking harms nearly every organ of the body, causes many diseases, and impairs the health of smokers in general. Smoking causes cancer, heart disease, stroke, lung disease, and diabetes. Smoking also increases the risk of tuberculosis, certain eye diseases, and problems with the immune system. Quitting smoking lowers the risk of smoking-related diseases and can add years to a person’s life. E-cigarettes, often called vapes, are not safe for youth, young adults, pregnant women, as well as adults who do not currently use tobacco products.
The smoke and smell pollute the air and annoy other people around.
It impairs others’ health through second-hand smoke.

Writing Task-Jul 2

In your culture, what is the polite or appropriate way to;
    - greet someone     - receive a gift     - say goodbye
    - show respect to someone      - be polite to someone?
Write an essay in response to one of the questions with an Intro, Body, and Conclusion.
[Intro] When someone gives a gift in a formal situation, most people in Japan tend to receive a gift in a well-behaved manner.
[Body] [SS-1] First, the receiver tries to look surprised by the gift because they don’t want the giver to think it was expected.<= [SD-1] In some cases, the receiver often tries to refuse to take the gift until the giver repeatedly asks to take it. [SS-2] Also, people don’t open the gift right away because they’re afraid to look childish.<= [SD-2] They don’t want to mess around the place with the wrapping paper, either.
[Conclusion] Neither the giver nor the receiver of a gift wants to make a big deal of it in Japan, at least in a formal situation.
