Video Transcript and Tasks-Feb 27

[Intro] It’s always important to be polite. But what this means isn’t always the same. It’s different across cultures . . . and it changes as new technologies emerge and develop. Take the mobile phone, for example. Twenty-five years ago, phones were only for talking. And phones couldn’t move very far. But now we use them for everything—all the time! Because of this, we need new rules around when we should—and, more importantly, when we shouldn’t—use our phones.
[US] A recent survey in the U.S., for example, says that 62 percent of people believe it’s rude and inappropriate to speak on your phone in a restaurant. 88 percent of people say it’s bad manners to use your phone at a family dinner. And 95 percent of people say it’s completely unacceptable to use your phone in quiet places, like in a movie theater.
But in the U.S., most people think talking on your phone is OK in public spaces, like in the street or on public transportation. [Others] This is very different in Japan. You can use your phone, but it’s very disrespectful to talk on it while on the bus or train. This is because chatting loudly invades people’s personal space and can make others feel awkward. But in some countries, like China, this isn’t a problem. People chat on the phone anywhere and everywhere, and it isn’t unusual or uncommon to interrupt conversations to answer the phone.
But there is one place where using the phone is always impolite: the classroom. In 2018, primary and secondary schools in France banned mobile phones because children used them too much. Now many other countries want to do the same thing.
[CS] But it’s a bit more complicated with adult learners. After all, it can often be impossible not to use smartphones. They are our calendars, dictionaries, calculators—even our notebooks! But whenever and wherever we use our phones, it’s important to do so with respect. That’s always a sure way to avoid embarrassment.

- greet someone - receive a gift - say goodbye - show respect to someone - be polite to someone?
Write an essay in response to one of the above questions with an IntroBody with supporting details, and Conclusion.
[IntroWhen someone gives a gift in a formal situation, most people in Japan tend to receive a gift in a well-behaved manner.
[Body[SS-1] First, the receiver tries to look surprised by the gift because they don’t want the giver to think it was expected.<= [SD-1] In some cases, the receiver often tries to refuse to take the gift until the giver repeatedly asks to take it. [SS-2] Also, people don’t open the gift right away because they’re afraid to look childish.<= [SD-2] They don’t want to mess around the place with the wrapping paper, either.

Essay Writing-Feb 2

Write an essay about a new business you want to create and what color(s) you will use.
Example: If you’re designing a new restaurant, what colors would you use for the outdoor signs, interior (walls/floor/ceiling/furniture), tableware, and employee uniform? For or to achieve what?

[Intro] My new business will be Bringing Nature Home. It will be a landscaping company. I love planting flowers and trees, and I think I am good at it.

[SS-1] I will go to people’s homes and make their gardens more beautiful. I will not need an office because I will work outside. [SS-2] I will buy a van and paint it blue. The blue will represent the sky. When customers see blue, they will think of peaceful environments and the fresh air that plants need. [SS-3] will put the name of my business on all sides of the van. I will use green letters. Green will make customers think about nature and plants.

[CS] I think my landscaping business will be popular because I will use color psychology to attract customers, and I will be able to advertise Bringing Nature Home wherever I go.
