- 1683  Qing Dynasty of China defeated the kingdom and annexed Taiwan.
- 1895  Taiwan was ceded to Japan in the Treatment of Shimonoseki (下関条約)
The First Sino-Japanese War broke out between Qing Dynasty China and Japan in 1894 following a dispute over the sovereignty of Korea. By then, the majority of Taiwan's inhabitants were Han Chinese descendants or assimilated offspring with the aborigines.
- 1895-1915  Colonization (植民地化)

- 1915-37 Assimilation  (同化)
Taiwan would be viewed as an extension of the Home Islands: a public school system was established to educate Taiwanese to understand their role and responsibilities as Japanese subjects, the use of the Japanese language was rewarded, and local governance and an elected advisory committee that included the locals were instituted.
- 1937-45 Integration (融合)
Japan made the Taiwanese adopt Japanese names and surnames, promoted Japanese as the official language and encouraged the people to speak it at home, encouraged them to wear Japanese dress, learn Japanese customs, and worship Japanese Shinto, and forced the Taiwanese to enlist as volunteers in the Japanese armed services.

Chiken #3-Jan 21

[3] Unwanted Males Killed at Birth
At an Iowa hatchery for layer chickens, 150,000 newborn male chicks are shredded every single day. Male chicks born at the hatchery are sent off to slaughter the very day they take their first breath. Workers grab them by their wings, toss them onto conveyor belts, and throw them down a chute for their final moments in a grinding machine, in which they are ground up while they are still alive. All this is a normal procedure and widely accepted at commercial hatcheries within the bounds of animal welfare laws. The egg industry considers male chicks useless because they don’t lay eggs and can’t be raised profitably for meat.
Image  Male Chick Culling
Video (disturbing!)  Unwanted Males Killed at Birth (3:43)

Question
Male chicks of egg layers are culled at birth, and their sisters are slaughtered once they’ve laid around 500+ eggs.
If you’re in the chicken business, what would you do with male chicks?
