Nature is critical to our survival: it provides us with
our oxygen, regulates our weather
patterns, and produces our food, feed, and fiber.
But human activity has altered almost
75 percent of the earth’s surface, squeezing
wildlife and nature into an ever-smaller corner of the planet. The
health of ecosystems on which we and all other species depend is deteriorating more rapidly than ever,
affecting our economies, livelihoods, food security, health, and quality of
life worldwide. Deforestation and desertification - caused by human
activities and climate change - pose major
challenges to sustainable
development and have affected the lives and livelihoods of millions of people.
- Forests are home to around 1.6 billion people and over
80% of all land species of animals, plants, and insects.
- As for biodiversity, of the 8,300 animal breeds, 8% are
extinct, and 22% are at risk of
extinction.
Goal 15.5: Take urgent
action to reduce the degradation of natural habitats, and stop the
loss of biodiversity.

The ocean covers three-quarters of the Earth’s surface and drives global systems
that make the Earth habitable for humankind because rainwater,
drinking water, weather, much of our food, and the oxygen in the air are
all ultimately provided and regulated by the sea.
- Oceans absorb 30% of carbon dioxide and 90%
of the excess
heat in
the climate system.
- Human activities warm and acidify oceans, and emit more and more carbon into oceans.
- Over three billion people depend on marine and coastal biodiversity for
their livelihoods.

[Goal 13: Take urgent
action to combat climate change and its impacts]
2024 was the warmest, and 2023 was the second-warmest
year on record, with the worst carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse
gases in the atmosphere. Climate change is
affecting every country, weather patterns are changing, sea levels are rising, and
weather events are becoming more extreme.
Limiting global warming to 1.5ºC above the pre-industrial level would
require rapid, far-reaching, and unprecedented changes in all aspects of
society, according to the Intergovernmental
Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
- From 1880 to 2012, the average global temperature increased
by 0.85°C. For each 1 degree of temperature increase, grain yields
decline by about 5%.
- Oceans have warmed, the amounts of snow and ice have diminished, and the sea level has risen.
From 1901 to 2010, the global average sea level rose by 19 cm due to warming
and ice melt.

makes people feel relaxed. However, allocating the limited available space in a city for nature, sports,
and playgrounds poses a challenge. If your city is planning to build a park,
how much of its available space should be allocated to nature?
Write your response in six to eight
sentences.

I’d propose that more than
half of the park be used for people to relax in nature. Since a park is a
public space, the majority of the space should be dedicated to a space where
everyone can enjoy spending their time in nature. Also, there is little green
space in cities, even though nature gives people the chance to relax and
refresh themselves. We need just enough space for people to walk, run, ride a
bicycle, or sit down to enjoy their time in nature. In addition, there are
already quite a few facilities for art, sports, and other activities in and
around the city. Our new park should be a place where people can enjoy nature.
