SDG 15-Dec 24

[SDG 15: Life on Land]
Nature is critical to our survival: it provides us with our oxygen, regulates our weather patterns, and produces our food, feed, and fiber. But human activity has altered almost 75 percent of the earth’s surface, squeezing wildlife and nature into an ever-smaller corner of the planet. The health of ecosystems on which we and all other species depend is deteriorating more rapidly than ever, affecting our economies, livelihoods, food security, health, and quality of life worldwide. Deforestation and desertification - caused by human activities and climate change - pose major challenges to sustainable development and have affected the lives and livelihoods of millions of people.
- Forests are home to around 1.6 billion people and over 80% of all land species of animals, plants, and insects.
- As for biodiversity, of the 8,300 animal breeds, 8% are extinct, and 22% are at risk of extinction.
Goal 15.5: Take urgent action to reduce the degradation of natural habitats, and stop the loss of biodiversity.
de- adds the meaning "opposite", "remove", or "reduce" to a noun or verb: deforestation, degrade, decode<->encode.
