[Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities]
While cities and *metropolitan areas drive economic growth, rapid urbanization poses challenges to people and the environment. It creates slums and puts
pressure on infrastructures and services, such as waste, water supply,
sanitation, roads, and transportation systems. Also, unplanned urbanization worsens pollution and public health.
*metropolitan<-
metropolis a very large city
<- metro relating to a
large city/area: ~ area, ~ Tokyo
- About half of the global population lives in cities,
and the number is expected to reach 70% by 2050.
- Most of the new urban populations are
created in the developing world, especially in Asia and Africa.
- Cities account for over
two-thirds of energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
Goal 11.1: Provide
access for slum dwellers to affordable housing and services.
Goal 11.2: Provide
safe, affordable, and sustainable public transport systems.
Goal 11.3: Plan and
enhance sustainable urbanization in all countries.
