Narrator: The common cold is a very common illness, especially in the winter.But is it the cold that causes it? Meet doctors Javid, Helen, and Phil, who want to know if it’s fact or fiction: can you really catch a cold from being cold?

Phil:          I think it’s absolute nonsense, I think you catch a cold from a cold virus.

Helen:       But then we tend to see more colds in winter and my Gran, very wise woman my Grandma, and she always says, “Make sure you’re covered up; otherwise you’ll catch a cold.” I mean . . . there might be something in it?

Javid:       I just think that we weren’t designed to exist in the cold weather.

Phil:          Javid doesn’t like being cold.   Javid: I hate it.         Phil: I think we should send Javid out to get really cold.

Caption:   Can I catch it? Can you catch a cold from being cold?

Narrator: To find out whether being cold can give you a cold, Javid is heading off to the *Cairngorm Mountains in the Scottish Highlands. Javid and 30 others are going to take their coats off at the peak of the mountain and see if they catch colds.   

Javid:       How long are the coats coming off for?

Rob:          Fifteen minutes, guys.                                 

Javid:       Right, so shall we do it?            Crowd:      Yes!

Javid:       After you. Rob, how cold is it?                    

Rob: It’s about two degrees.      Javid:       It feels like it.

Javid:       Three . . . two . . . one . . . coats on!           Crowd:      Whee!

Narrator: Now they have to wait for the results.

Caption:   Can I catch it?          How far from a sneeze can you catch a disease?

Narrator: Helen hates getting ill, and when you sneeze illnesses can move from one person to another.

Helen wants to know: how far from a sneeze can you catch a disease? To find out, she’s carrying out an experiment with the help of Professor Andrew Eastern. For which they need a load of these, one of these, and one of these . . . Meet Sneezing Sally. They are going to measure the distance a sneeze can travel up a bus.

Helen:       Sally, are you ready? OK . . . and action! So what happens next?                               

Andrew: So now we just wait.

Narrator: Andrew and his plates go back to the lab for testing. The results show that the sneeze traveled five rows. That’s nearly five and a half meters.

Helen:       Keep your sneeze in! Don’t spread your disease five and a half meters away!

Caption: Can I catch it?           Can you catch a cold from being cold?

Narrator: Back with Javid, the test results showed that nobody caught a cold, but experts still had some advice on how to stay healthy.

Rob: Eat well, that’s the key thing. You know—exercise, wash your hands.

Narrator: Colds and illnesses spread from your nose and throat when you sneeze and land on other people. So, if you sneeze, always cover your nose and mouth, and always remember to wash your hands!

There you have it: you don’t catch a cold from being cold, but it’s still very important to look after yourself.

Nature is critical to our survival: it provides us with our oxygen, regulates our weather patterns, and produces our food, feed, and fiber. But human activity has altered almost 75 percent of the earth’s surface, squeezing wildlife and nature into an ever-smaller corner of the planet. The health of ecosystems on which we and all other species depend is deteriorating more rapidly than ever, affecting our economies, livelihoods, food security, health, and quality of life worldwide. Deforestation and desertification – caused by human activities and climate change – pose major challenges to sustainable development and have affected the lives and livelihoods of millions of people.

- Forests are home to Around 1.6 billion people and over 80% of all land species of animals, plants, and insects.

- As for biodiversity, of the 8,300 animal breeds, 8% are extinct and 22% are at risk of extinction.

Goal 15.3: By 2030, combat desertification, restore degraded land and soil, including land affected by desertification, drought, and floods, and strive to achieve a land degradation-neutral world

Goal 15.5: Take urgent action to reduce the degradation of natural habitats, and stop the loss of biodiversity.

2019 was the second warmest year on record with the worst carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Climate change is affecting every country, weather patterns are changing, sea levels are rising, and weather events are becoming more extreme. Limiting global warming to 1.5ºC above the pre-industrial level would require rapid, far-reaching, and unprecedented changes in all aspects of society, according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) .

- From 1880 to 2012, the average global temperature increased by 0.85°C. For each 1 degree of temperature increase, grain yields decline by about 5%.

- Oceans have warmed, the amounts of snow and ice have diminished, and the sea level has risen. From 1901 to 2010, the global average sea level rose by 19 cm due to warming and ice melt.

- Global emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) have increased by almost 50% since 1990.

Goal 13.2: Integrate climate change measures into national policies, strategies, and planning

Goal 13.3: Improve education, raise awareness, and expand human and institutional capacity on climate change.
