鉄腕ロボ、農地を駆ける 食サプライズ
米カリフォルニア州の海岸沿いの街、オックスナード。イチゴの栽培が盛んで別名「ストロベリーコースト」と呼ばれるこの地では、24本のアームとカメラが付いた機械が成熟具合を識別し、器用にイチゴを収穫する。スペインのアグロボット社が開発したロボットだ。
人類が生きていく上で欠かせない食料を供給する農業。20世紀半ばの「緑の革命（グリーンレボリューション）」で化学肥料や農薬の開発、灌漑（かんがい）施設や農業機械の普及が進むと、生産量は飛躍的に増えた。米国では2018年に、1日で収穫できる量が1970年に比べて約20倍になったとの推計もある。
その先にあるのが、ロボットが主役の農業だ。
人手不足を補う働き手
アグロボットの機械は24時間いつでも稼働し、東京ドーム1.7個分に相当する20エーカー（約8万940平方メートル）の土地で栽培するイチゴを3日で収穫できる。創業者のジュアン・ブラボー最高経営責任者（CEO）は「イチゴが（ロボットのカメラから）見える位置に実っていれば、収穫の正確性は人間よりも高い。労働力不足を補う意義は大きい」と精度に自信を持つ。
カリフォルニアでは農業の担い手不足が深刻で、人を確保しきれずに収穫を断念する農家もあるという。ブラボー氏は「ほかの果物も収穫できるロボットを開発中だ」と話す。世界の協業先にロボットを使ってもらう未来を描く。
自然と向き合う農業で、生産性を大きく高めると期待されているのがドローン（小型無人航空機）だ。指定した農場の範囲内を全地球測位システム（GPS）などを活用して自動飛行し、農作物の生育や害虫の発生状況を把握する。「精密農業」の起点で、農薬散布など活用できる分野も幅広い。
国土の半分以上が砂漠のイスラエル――。そんな国で農業革命を生み出すスタートアップの代表格がタラニス・ビジュアル社だ。イスラエル軍の技術関連の精鋭部隊出身であるオフィア・シュラム氏が設立した同社は、特殊カメラの付いたドローンや小型飛行機を使い、上空10～15メートルから作物の葉一枚一枚まで判別する画像を高速で撮影する。
時速200キロで自動飛行する小型飛行機が品川区より大きい6000エーカー分の画像を1時間で取得し、精密な画像を撮影。独自の生物学データや気候情報など複数のデータを組み合わせて人工知能（AI）で解析する。データをもとに病害虫の検知や農薬散布の量やタイミングなどを農家に助言しており、コストを最大で3割削減できるという。
シュラム氏は「今後10年で農場はほぼ完全に自動化され、人の監視もいらなくなるだろう」と予想する。タラニスは現在、米国やロシア、南米などでサービスを広げる。18年には住友商事が同社に出資した。欧州事業開発部門のアルベナ・トドロバ氏は「広大な土地で飛行機を飛ばし、必要なデータを農家に届けるスピードに衝撃を受けた」と語る。

A barcode is black and white lines that identify
the manufacturer and product.
It is printed or put on each item and used mainly at
supermarkets to identify the item.
When a barcode is scanned at the cash register, it
identifies the item, and then the price information of the item is
entered from the store computer.
It not only increases the speed of
checkout process but also helps the management to control the
inventory (stock) of the merchandise.
