SDG 6-Nov 19

[Goal 6: Clean water and *Sanitation
*sanitation <- sanitary (adj) clean and not dangerous for your health; clean, hygienic, sterile
While handwashing is one of the most effective actions you can take to reduce the spread of bacteria and viruses and also prevent infections, billions of people still lack safe water sanitation, and funding is not enough.
- One in three people does not
have access to safe drinking water, and two out of five people do not have a basic hand-washing facility with soap and water.
- More than 670 million people still
practice open defecation. (<= 5x of Japan’s population, 2x of US population)
Water scarcity affects more than 40 percent of the global population and is projected to rise.
- 2.4 billion people
lack access to basic sanitation services, such as toilets or *latrines.
*latrines [ləˈtriːn] a toilet, hole, or simpler facility used in a camp/barracks or for an emergency.
- Over 80 percent of wastewater from human activities is discharged into rivers or seas without any pollution removal.
Goal 6.1: Achieve access to safe and affordable drinking water for all.
Goal 6.2: Achieve access to
decent sanitation and hygiene for all and end open defecation.

Satellite observation revealed that the huge crack that appeared in the Afar region in eastern Africa in 2005 was caused by volcanic activity underneath the surface.

2. Read Land of Death and Collision & Devision [Par.6-9] and write the main idea in one sentence.
(Mechanism; moving tectonic plates)
The region lies on three tectonic plates, which are continuously moving, crushing in some places, like the Indian subcontinent, and splitting in others, like the African and American continents.

2. Read the conclusion [Par.10] and check the sample MI.
As the three tectonic plates move apart from each other, the Afar region is expected to be separated from the African continent, and a new sea will emerge between them like the Atlantic in a million years’ time.

SDG 4-Nov 12

[Goal 4: Quality Education]
Education is the key to escaping poverty, getting a good job, and developing a career. Over the past decade, major progress has been made towards increasing access to education and school enrollment rates at all levels, particularly for girls.
- Some 750 million adults, two-thirds of them women, remained illiterate in 2016. Half of the global illiterate population lives in South Asia, and a quarter lives in sub-Saharan Africa.
- About 260 million children were still out of school in 2018, nearly one-fifth of the global population in that age group.
- More than half of children who have not enrolled in school live in sub-Saharan Africa, and more than 85 percent of children in sub-Saharan Africa are not learning the minimum.

Goal 4.1: By 2030, ensure that all girls and boys complete free, unbiased, and quality primary and secondary education
Goal 4.5: By 2030, eliminate gender disparities in education and ensure equal access to all levels of education and vocational training for the vulnerable, including persons with disabilities, indigenous peoples, and children in vulnerable situations
Goal 4.6: By 2030, ensure that all youth and a substantial proportion of adults, both men and women, achieve literacy and numeracy.

SDG 3-Nov 8

[Goal 3: Global Health and *Well-being]
Ensuring healthy lives and promoting *well-being at all ages is essential to sustainable development. Currently, the world is facing a global health crisis, unlike any other time, like the COVID-19 pandemic and global warming, which are spreading human suffering, destabilizing the global economy, and overturning the lives of billions of people around the globe.
Before the pandemic, major progress was made in improving the health of millions of people. Significant strides were made in increasing life expectancy and reducing some of the common killers associated with child and maternal mortality. But more efforts are needed to fully eradicate a wide range of diseases and *address many different continuing and emerging health issues. By focusing on providing more efficient funding of health systems, improved sanitation and hygiene, and increased access to doctors, significant progress can be made in helping to save the lives of millions.
*well-being  the state of being comfortable, healthy, or happy; welfare, health, happiness, comfort, safety
*address  to give attention to an issue
Goal 3.2: By 2030, end preventable deaths of newborns and children under 5 years of age.
Goal 3.4: By 2030, reduce premature mortality by one-third from non-communicable diseases through prevention and treatment, and promote mental health and well-being.
