[2] How long do commercial chickens live? 

Chickens live for between 5 and 10 years, but factors like quality of life, breed, and the environment play a significant role in their lifespan. Chickens raised for meat are called broilers. They do not live nearly that long because they’re raised solely for their meat. They are usually slaughtered between the ages of 6 and 10 weeks.  They are bred to mature quickly and reach a target weight at a young age. This cuts down on the cost of feeding and raising birds for slaughter, and it makes it easier to produce more birds throughout the year.

Chickens meant for laying eggs, egg layers, mature more slowly. They begin laying eggs around the age of 5 months. By the age of 4 or 5 years, most hens have slowed down or stopped laying eggs. In commercial farms, hens that have stopped laying are usually killed to prevent using up resources on an unproductive bird. These older hens often turn up in pet food or soup stock because their meat is less tender and palatable.  Battery Cages

[Intro] I live in Ome, a small city located on the northwest edge of Tokyo. A good part of the city is surrounded by the Tama Mountains, which provide us with clean air and water. I think Ome offers a wonderful nature that is enjoyed by both residents and visitors at ease.

[Body] First, Ome is about an hour away from downtown Tokyo by train. (Convenience) => SD/Example  Second, we can enjoy nature in just a ten-minute walk from the JR train stations. A hen could lay for ten years. However, most commercial egg layers live no more than two years, and then they are replaced with new egg layers, hens. 

They usually lay 5 eggs per week and roughly 260 eggs in their first year, but only about 500 eggs in their lifetime. A hen could lay roughly the following percentage of its first-year laying:

Year 1: 100%     Year 2: 85%      Year 3: 68%       Year 4: 60%      Year 5: 50%
